Non-Governmental Organizations essays Non-Governmental Organizations are assembled to aid people that are otherwise incapable. They are established to better the lifestyle and the living conditions that our fellow humans endure. Third World Countries lack many necessities that are taken for granted in the United States. This paper gave me a better outlook on what actually goes on in other countries were survival is the main aspect of everyday life. The research that was involved with writing my paper was somewhat hard to come by. My main source of information was the internet, but I wanted to find a country that hadnt been publicized about their problems. I looked for a poor country, that isnt really known to the world as one of the poorest societies. I had trouble locating current information that I could find on Mozambique, but I did find history on the country and based my paper on that. I looked for current information about Mozambique, but the bulk of returned information was tourist related. Before I wrote this paper I had never known of a country named Mozambique, learning a little about their history and getting a general view of how Mozambicans live their lives was interesting to me. It was difficult finding a potential resolution to the problems in Mozambique. Every solution that came to my mind was too small in scope to apply to the widespread problems in Mozambique. Establishing an Organization that isnt designed to make a profit was a pretty new concept to me. It was nice to think abstractly and offer something to people who are in need. As I progressed I realized that with careful disbursement of funds, and dedicated people, the state of the country could be improved. Though the idea of a Non-Profit organization to repair the country is great, the problems are sunken deep into the foundation of Mozambique. These Are The Best German Films for German-Learners

These Are The Best German Films for German-Learners Which German movies are best for German-learners? Many of my readers already know that Im a big fan of German cinema. I even have an entire Web site devoted to the  German-Hollywood Connection. Its sort of a hobby of mine. Im also a firm advocate of showing German films in the classroom. Movies in German can be a great benefit to anyone learning German- if  the teacher and/or student knows how to go about it. In that vein, I wrote an article for the Fall 1993 issue of  Die Unterrichtspraxis  entitled â€Å"Marlene Dietrich in the German Classroom† which was about a German film project that I have done with my high school students over the years. With a suitable approach, even â€Å"ancient† black-and-white movies like â€Å"Der blaue Engel† (1930) can be successfully turned into a learning experience for 16-year-old students. But when Franka Potente  burst onto the scene in â€Å"Run Lola Run,† German teachers finally had something very modern to work with. My students love that movie!  I  love that movie! But if you want to learn German, you cant just casually watch â€Å"Lola rennt† or any other German film, so I developed some â€Å"Lola† worksheets for classroom use.   But what other films are best for German-learners? Obviously, everyone will have their own opinion, and some films are more suitable than others.   There are certain criteria  we used to come up with that list, as well as a longer list of  30 films  that you can view on the next page. Here are the main criteria: Must be a sound film in German (no silent films).Must be a film generally available on video in the English-speaking world.Must be entertaining or interesting in some way for German-learners.The intended audience is German-learners who are at least 18 years old. Although foreign-language teachers in my district are allowed to show R-rated foreign movies in a high school classroom (using a  parental permission form), I know that in some US school districts that isnt the case, so for survey purposes, we set the age limit at 18 and over. (Dont get me started on the ratings debacle: â€Å"The Harmonists† is rated â€Å"R† in the US, but â€Å"6 and up† in Germany!) And although I have shown parts of Fritz Langs wonderful â€Å"Metropolis† (along with the Queen music video with â€Å"Metropolis† scenes) to my students, as a silent film, â€Å"Metropolis† doesnt make our list. But  Downfall  (Der Untergang), the  Heimat  chronicle (now on DVD), and  Nowhere in Africa  (Nirgendwo in Afrika) do. Because of space limitations, we could only include 10 films in our poll.  Ã‚   Top German Movies The Top 35 Best Films for German Our movie poll  was limited to only ten films, and some of the films listed below were not available on DVD or video at the time of our survey. So here is an  updated list  of more than 30 films in German (some from Austria or Switzerland) rated highly by me, by various film critics, and film Web sites. In most cases, the films listed are available on DVD in the American (NTSC, Region 1) video standard with English subtitles. For some films you can click on the title to learn more. We also have a list of the best  films in English  for German-learners, plus a full  German Movie Index  by title. Please note that some of the Region 1 DVD releases listed below are rated R in the U.S. and may not be suitable for viewing by students under the age of 18. For obvious reasons, our list does not include English-language films, but there is another category of interest to German teachers and students:  Hollywood films in German. Since all non-German films shown to a wide audience in Germany are dubbed into German, it can be both amusing and instructive for English-speaking German-learners to view well-known Hollywood productions in German.  And since the students are usually already familiar with the films story, the lack of subtitles is not a serious drawback. The main disadvantage is that such films are usually in PAL video or Region 2 DVD format, requiring a multi-system player. Although some Hollywood films in German are available as NTSC video from various outlets, in my experience the quality is poor. It is best if you can obtain an original German DVD or video.

Lessons Form the Classroom Essay A. I think my main strength is that I like interacting with people. In my career thus far I have worked in multi-disciplinary teams, made daily presentations and managed teams so working with people is natural and comfortable for me. I’m friendly, inclusive and approachable. I think this is an asset that will carry me far as a teacher. I have experienced teachers who were intimidating and I found it detrimental to my learning. I want my students to feel comfortable to ask me anything, repeat anything, or explain anything. I think that as time progresses in the classroom I’ll be able to develop good relationships with the students where they feel safe and uninhibited. I am naturally and therefore normally well organised and prepared which I think is a key skill in ELT. At my university induction lecture the speaker said ‘fail to plan, and plan to fail’ which I think was valuable advice and which has stuck with me. Planning my lessons appropriately helps me to better understand what I’m teaching, embeds it in my mind so I’m more confident in delivering it and helps me to predict possible problems and their solutions. I think that as my confidence and skills grow I will be able to compose highly detailed lesson plans that will deliver my objectives. I am a creative person and like devising innovative approaches to problems. I like to challenge the standard to create new ways of doing things. The results have engaged and generated new perspectives. I hope this will translate well into the classroom where I can devise games and exercises that will appeal to the students and accelerate their learning. As my confidence, knowledge and skills develop I plan to combine my own methods into my teaching. My main weakness is my inability to express grammar rules and understand grammatical terminology such as ‘present continuous’. Although my primary school was strict with grammar, punctuation and spelling, we were not taught the labels of grammar terms beyond the basics of nouns, verbs, and adjectives. So whilst I can speak and write sentences that are clear and grammatically correct I am finding the terminology challenging. As an English language teacher this is obviously something that I need to remedy as soon as possible! I am studying several grammar reference books from the suggested reading list and using mind mapping to help me understand and learn the rules. I remind myself that I already know the grammar rules I just don’t know that I know them! I have never used an interactive white board (IWB) before and have historically been reluctant to embrace new technology so I have not made full use of it as yet. As the teachers have used the IWB extensively in classes I have seen how convenient and flexible it is. I am keen to address this challenge as I believe it will be enormously beneficial to me in the classroom and therefore improve and accelerate my learners’ experiences. I am going to take advantage of break times to practise using it to build my confidence and then set myself a deadline to incorporate it into a lesson. I am sure that after using it in a few lessons I will feel more composed and will easily integrate it into classes. I would like to improve my ability to communicate with the students in a more concise and succinct way. I have found that my instructions have been too complicated and lengthy and thus caused confusion. As well as cultivating this skill I’m going to try to integrate more gestures, demonstrations and pictures to resolve the issue. My research has produced a checklist for communication, (concise, concrete, clear, correct, coherent, complete), which I will use to test my instructions going forward. B. I have been impressed with the eliciting skills of the Celta teachers. In particular James Johnson has been demonstrating how to proficiently organise materials and structure questions to draw out desired responses. He is adept at posing questions that produce the target language or lexis. His seamless ability has demonstrated how effective this technique is in encouraging the students to think for themselves rather than simply giving them the answer, keeping them alert and assessing their language level as well as understanding of the concept being taught. In this way he truly engages with the students and thus his lessons are memorable. This is a very unnatural communication for me so to be able to smoothly incorporate this skill into my teaching would be a triumph for me. All of the teachers have a very calm, confident and charming disposition, which pervades the classroom. They are clearly highly skilled and experienced, which generates trust. I think these qualities are fundamental for effective learning. These qualities seem to be intrinsic to the instructors but I’m hoping that over time I will ripen or at least acquire the ability to convey a fraction of this demeanour. C. When I have completed my Celta training I will be just at the beginning of my career so continuing professional development will be paramount to consolidate what I’ve learned so far, keep my skills up to date, learn new and different techniques from other teachers and experts, and keep abreast of industry trends. I love learning and developing myself and regularly take classes, workshops and courses for fun and personal development as well as career development, so I am highly motivated to continue my ELT development. My research has made me aware of various online communities, which could be a great way to exchange ideas. I also intend to stay in touch with my peers on the course so we can continue to learn together, share experiences, ideas, problems and solutions.

Cold War's Impact on America Politically, Socially, and Economically As the Soviet Union approaches Berlin from the East, the allied forces invade from the west. Hitler’s German war-machine was crumbling. The United States had to make an enormous decision. Should they attack the Red Army of the Soviet Union? Should they keep the increasingly shaky alliance with the Russians and end the war in Europe? America chose to remain allies, resulting in a decision that affected the world for the next 46 years. World War 2 had concluded but now there was a new enemy, the Soviet Communist. The post-war world left the Soviets and the United States in an ideological power struggle. The origin of the cold war is hard to pinpoint. There were several issues and disagreements that led to it. The political differences between the 2 nations were absolute opposites. America was a democracy, a system that allows its citizens to choose the political party in which runs the government. The Communists were led by one of the most vicious dictators in human history, Joseph Stalin. America has a capitalist economic system that allows private ownership of business and property. This freedom allows citizens the opportunity for financial success. All businesses and institutions of the Russian socialist economy were owned, regulated, and operated by the government. The purpose of American government is to protect the individual rights of its citizens. The soviet regime stood for control. World War 2 had just ended, and these two super-powers were becoming agitated, leery, and even paranoid of looming intentions. Although U.S.S.R and the U.S. were allies in the war, the suspicion and distrust was radiating from both sides. The Verona Project ... ...mic age is unimaginable. Taxes were raised on Americans, giving huge amounts of money to the military and national defense. To conclude, the cold war had an enormous effect on nearly every aspect of American life. With varying results, some were good and others were bad. I sense that the Cold war was helpful to us as a nation. Russian competition pushed the U.S. toward improvements in technology, military, science, and education. In a world with 2 superpowers the U.S. was driven to be better than the competitor. But now we are alone at the top and there is nowhere to go but down. Hopefully the termination of the U.S.S.R. didn’t open up a spot for a new and better world power to emerge in the near future. Analysis of “Eat at My Restaurant †Cash Flow” Essay

Understanding the flow of cash within an organization is critical to knowing the health of an organization. Without this understanding, a business may run into a situation where even though they are profitable, they may not have enough cash on hand to meet their obligations. This paper will look at the case study Eat at My Restaurant – Cash Flow (Gibson, 2013) and will analyze the difference between net cash provided by operating activities and net income and determine which a better indicator of long-term profitability is. It will then provide an analysis of the cash flow ratios for each of the firms contained in the case study. Finally, this paper will conclude with a determination of if one of the companies in the case study has a cash flow problem. Net Cash versus Net Income Net income is derived from the Income Statement, which is based on the accrual method of accounting. Under the accrual method, revenue is recognized when earned and expenses are recognized when incurred. Net cash provided by operating activities uses the cash method of accounting where cash and expenses are recognized when received and paid. For example, under the accrual method, which net income is based on, a company would recognize revenue for services delivered based on the delivery of services instead of when a customer actually pays the invoice for these services. This is an important distinction because from an income perspective, the company will eventually receive that money, the company will not actually have that cash in-hand to pay expenses or make investments until receipt of payment from their customer. This could create a situation where although the company looks profitable, in reality they cannot make their short-term commitments. When considering whether net cash provided by operating activities or net income is a better indicator of long-term profitability, the writer feels that the words â€Å"long-term† are critical to that decision. While net cash is  critical to determine the ability of the organization to meet its immediate requirements, the non-cash factors that are included in the net income calculation portray a more accurate view of the long-term profitability. Also because of the timing differences between when revenue and expenses are recognized, the accrual method behind the net income model will produce visibility that is more accurate. For example, a month that produces low volume of sales and a high volume of receivable could produce a positive cash flow when in reality that low sales volume will negatively affect the subsequent months. This variance wou ld be visible in the net income but would not be visible in net cash. Case Study Company Comparison Yum Brands, Inc. In the two years presented in the case study (2009-2010), Yum Brands, Inc. saw a significant decline in its operating cash flow/current maturities of long-term debt and current notes payable. This indicates that they are less able to meet their current debt obligation. However, when looking at operating cash flow/total debt, there is an increase of 7.3% showing that Yum Brands, Inc. is more able to cover its debt with operating cash. A review of the operating cash flow per share shows an increase of $1.14 showing an improvement in its ability to make capital expense decisions and pay dividends to its shareholders. Finally, Yum Brands, Inc. a .9 increase in operating cash flow/cash dividends. This shows that they are more able to pay dividends with its yearly operating cash. Panera Bread During the same two-year period (2009-2010), Panera Bread did not have any long-term debt mature or have any current notes payable. They did however have 17.27% decrease in their ability to meet their total debt burden with operating cash. Panera Bread did show an increase of $0.74 in operating cash flow per share indicating an improved ability to make capital purchase decisions and pay dividends to its shareholders. Panera Bread did not make any dividend payments in either year. Starbucks In 2009 and 2010, Starbuck also did not have any long-term debt mature or have any current notes payable. However, they did show a 7.94% increase in their operating cash flow/total debt ratio. This indicates an improved ability to cover their total debt with operating cash flow. During this same period, Starbucks had an increase of $0.37 in operating cash flow per share indicating an improved ability to make capital purchase decisions and pay dividends to its shareholders. Although they did not pay any dividends in 2009, they did show an increase of 9.97 in operating cash flow/cash dividends in 2010. This shows that they are more able to pay dividends with yearly operating cash. Cash Flow Woes While Panera Bread does show an increase of 28.5% in net income-including noncontrolling interest, they are only showing an increase of 10.6% in net cash provided by operating activities. This combined with a 17.27% decrease in their operating cash flow/total debt ratio could indicate potential challenges meeting debt. Furthermore, although Panera Bread does show an improvement of $0.74 in operating cash flow per share, they have not issued any dividends. This could indicate that Panera Bread is trying to invest in growth or potentially they are having difficulty meeting cash obligations. For these reasons, the writer believes Panera Bread may be experiencing a cash flow problem; however, a deeper look into their financial statements, balance sheets and cash flow statements over a broader timeframe would be required to assess their true position. Conclusion Net Cash and Net Income are both critical elements allowing a view to the health of an organization. While it is imperative that a business has visibility to the cash available to pay debt, make investments, make capital purchases and pay its shareholders, it is equally important to have visibility to all revenue and expenses. Comparing Poems From Other Cultures Essay

In these two poems, identity is seen to be important, for in half-caste the author is trying to seek acceptance from others around him for who he is as a person, but in search for my tongue the author is losing her identity and is seeking help in finding out who she as a person. Half-caste portrays someone who feels that people label others without knowing them as people first, and how much it can hurt them. For John Agard says:†Explain yuself, wha you mean, when yu say half caste†. This shows that he is confused about how he portrays himself to others, and how others perceive him. This make you think that the way in people perceives you on first appearance makes you who you are.  Search for my tongue is like a cry out to others to help with her lost mother tongue, and she doesn’t know what her identity is because she is confused about which language is her. It also shows how people don’t understand how she feels or understand what she is going through with her struggle with the two languages that she uses. For it says: â€Å"You ask me what I mean by saying I have lost my tongue.† This shows that she feels isolated from others as they do not understand the internal struggle she is going through having to lose her original identity – her mother tongue – to a new identity, a foreign tongue.  In half-caste, the tone is quite angry and harsh. I feel that the tone is displayed in this way because he is angry with others for judging him for being mixed race, and the prejudices that everybody has towards others. For even though in the poem it just confronts the prejudice at half-caste people, there is always prejudice towards everybody, not just half-caste people. So in this poem he is challenging the fact that prejudice is wrong and unfair, and hurts people because they are being judged before people know them properly as a person. Some of this aggressive confrontational work is evident by the line: â€Å"So spiteful dem don’t want de sun pass.†Ã‚  This shows that prejudice people are so â€Å"spiteful† that they don’t think half-caste should be able to walk past them in the street. This shows that people can be severely hurt by a label, and that because of the way peoples minds have been brought up, they believe they are superior to so called â€Å"half-castes†, and believe the â€Å"half-castes† not worthy enough to even walk the same streets as the superior people.  In search, the tone is quite confused and lonely, and is unsure of who she is as a person. For her original identity was gujarati, but having had convert to a foreign language she feels that she has lost her original identity, and has been forced to take on a different identity because of the different language she has to communicate to others in the place she lives in now. For she says: â€Å"You could not use them both, even if you thought that way.†Ã‚  This shows that she feels she is losing her sense of identity, and feels she has to choose between the life she lives now and her original identity. She feels that the new language is pushing the other one away, and dominating her life so much that she forgets how her life used to be before it was controlled by the foreign language.  In half-caste Agard rejects the conventional punctuation, for there isn’t a single comma or full stop in the whole of the poem. Also, he misspells half of the words in his poem purposely to help get his message across to the reader. The lack of punctuation and misspelling is all for the purpose of the poem. As people think that he is half-caste, they believe him to be incapable of any proper thoughts, feelings or being capable to produce something that could make an impact on somebody else’s life. It is also used to strike the audience hard with his message of how everybody is equal no matter what their ethnic background is. In Search, the punctuation is consistent, but the poem structure is always different. The line lengths are all different, and there are no stanzas to separate the poem out – it is all just one long stanza. In Half-caste, there is 3 stanzas of various lengths, to help get the meaning of the poem across better to the audience and the poems lines are all of similar lengths, to keep it sharp and continuous.  The layout of search, with its punctuation and line lengths shows that she is trying to find some consistency in her life – she is trying to find what she knows in life to find in the end that she can, in her dreams. The fact that she also includes both English and Gujarati in her poem shows that even though she does use the English language, Gujarati is still an important part of her life, as it makes up part of who she is as a person. For she says: â€Å"Everytime I think I’ve forgotten†¦it blossoms out of my mouth.†Ã‚  This shows that even if she forgets, or is so used to using the foreign language, she cannot forget her native language even if she tried. This is because it has been a part of her culture and identity for so long, she cannot part from it, no matter what she is faced with or what ever happens to her.  So the identity that is portrayed in half-caste is no matter what ethnic background you come from, no matter what you look like as an individual, we are all equal human beings and all deserve the right to be able to live our lives to the full.  The identity that is portrayed in search is one that suggests that you cannot lose who you are as a person, no matter what you are faced with, even if you have to change your language or move somewhere else, you cannot change who you truly are as a person.

Our ability to concentrate depends on a number of things including but not limited to commitment, enthusiasm for the task ahead, skill at doing the task, our environment, our physical state and our emotional and physiological state. If we are able to improve on the above concentration skills, then we are able to achieve our goals. The obvious step is that improving ones concentration improves memory and to concentrate means to focus on the particular subject intensely. Thus by focusing, I will be able to easily memorize new facts easily or be able to recall previously memorized information (University of Cambridge). She attributes this to the fact that memory complaints have nothing with the ability to remember things but a failure to properly focus on the task at hand. Improving concentration methods include: Focusing on the task at hand. When in class I have realized that I should just focus on what am being taught, I should ask questions and be attentive. I now realize that I should tune off anything else except the subject matter in class. Although I may have fees problems, I should focus on what am being taught at that time and worry about fee problems later. I should try to avoid double tasking. I know that currently am volunteering at a local hospital, am taking three classes and having a part time job at a local restraint and as such I should try to balance my time so that I do not exhaust myself on the job. I have learned that when one tries to do several things at once, they have to divide their attention and as a result concentrate less on each individual task. The doctor also advices the use of meditation. Studies have shown that meditation can be a good brain tool that affects concentration skills. Therefore, if I use meditation the right way, I believe that my concentration will considerably improve (Dr. Michelon, Pascale). On the backdrop of improving my concentration, I also realize that I have to take initiatives to improve my memory. Dr. Michelon gives the following tips on how we can improve our memory; The first point is to pay attention and concentrate. I also realize that I should relate to the information am learning. According to the doctor, the more personal the information becomes, the easier it is to remember it. Thus I should develop a habit of asking myself how it makes me feel. I should also ask myself where else I have heard what the teacher is teaching us and where it can be applied. I should further ask myself whether there is something in my personal life that is related to the piece of information I am being taught. I should also train my brain too repeat information; come back to it more than once. Studies have shown that repeated information is easier to recall. Lastly but not least, I should elaborate on the information and think about it. According to the doctor, things that are concrete and have a clear meaning are easier to remember than vogue and abstract stuff. Therefore, I should try to attach meaning to the information am trying to memorize that will help me to recall the information easier on a later time. The brain as a result will have more cues to look for (Dr. Michelon, Pascale). I also had an interview with a counselor who was really helpful in helping me improve my concentration. Answer: some of these daily schedules include meditation. Mindful meditation for even 10 minutes a day greatly improves concentration. Engaging in brain games ensures that certain skills are more reinforced in the brain as well as improving ability to concentrate. Over several years time, the milky spore bacteria builds up in the soil and acts to suppress grub infestations. Another naturally-occurring bacteria, Bacillus thuringiensis japonensis (BTJ) may also be used to control Japanese beetle grubs. BTJ is applied to the soil, and grubs ingest it. Btj destroys the grubs digestive system and ultimately kills the larva. A beneficial nematode, Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, also works to control Japanese beetle grubs. Nematodes are microscopic parasitic roundworms that transport and feed on bacteria. When they find a grub, the nematodes penetrate the larva and inoculate it with bacteria, which quickly multiply within the grubs body. The nematode then feeds on the bacteria. Chemical Control: Some chemical pesticides are registered for control of Japanese beetle grubs. These pesticides should be applied in July or August when young grubs are feeding. Consult a pest control expert or your local agricultural extension office for specific information on selecting and using pesticides for grub control. How to Control Japanese Beetle Adults Physical Control: Where there is one Japanese beetle, there will soon be ten, so hand picking the earliest arrivals can help keep numbers down significantly. In the early morning, beetles are sluggish and can be shaken from branches into a bucket of soapy water. If Japanese beetle populations are high in your area, beetle control may include making smart decisions about what to plant in your yard. Japanese beetles love roses, grapes, lindens, sassafras, Japanese maple, and purple-leaf plums, so these plants should be avoided if Japanese beetle damage is a concern. Garden centers and hardware stores sell pheromone traps for Japanese beetles.
